If you've struggled with mental health or been in any type of therapy before, you are very familiar with the concept of Coping Skills.
Coping skills are the things that we all use to get us through difficult situations.
There are positive coping skills (i.e. going for a walk, listening to music, reaching out to a supportive and trusting friend, etc.) and negative coping skills (i.e. engaging in self-harm, self-medicating, going back to a co-dependnet relationship, etc) that we can engage in. Coping skills are different for everyone, based on our preferences. So, what works for one person, may not work for another. Therapy is all about honing the coping skills that make you feel good and work for you.
What problem I hear most about coping skills, is that in the moment of anger, sadness, or some difficult emotion, clients say they don't want to use their coping skills or forget entirely about their copings skills in the heat of the moment.
So, I have decided to make it easier and will be building a coping skills library for you here!
Our first stop is music!
We all love music.
So every-so-often I will be creating a playlist on Spotify for you to follow. If you aren't familiar with Spotify, please click the link and acquaint yourself. It is a host for free music and playlists that you can stream on your computer, tablet, phone, in your car, and it's pretty much awesome.
